    How to Install a Window

If you have windows that don’t close properly, have old windows that aren’t energy efficient or you’re looking to change the look and feel of the current windows in your home, you may need to install a window. The following steps can help you install a window in your home.

    How to Install a Window

    • The first thing you will want to do is measure for every window you are replacing. Be sure your measurements are accurate and take them from inside your home.
      • Width – Measure from the inside of the jam from one side of your window to the jamb on the opposite side. You will want to measure at the top, bottom and middle of your window. The narrowest measurement should be used.
      • Height – measure from the top of the windowsill to the bottom of the head jamb. You will want to measure left, right and middle, using the shortest measurement as your height.
    • Remove the sashes from your current window including parting bead and the inside stop. Be careful when removing these pieces as they can be used again.
    • Be sure to clean the window jambs and sill thoroughly. If there are holes use caulk to fill them.
    • You can now install your new windows. On the inside and outside stops on the jambs lay a bead of caulk. Caulk and install the sill.
    • Center you new sashes vertically into the new window frame, be sure the mounting holes are visible.
    • Put the header or expander into the top of the window and add a layer of caulk to the top.
    • You can now install a window into the opening making sure it is square. Use the mounting screws at the top and bottom of each side of the jamb, screwing them in so that they are not so tight that they wreck the side jambs.
    • Seal gaps between the top of the new window and the frame by sliding the header up.
    • Use the sashes to make sure there are no gaps and that your windows are working smoothly. Check the manufacturers notes for specific adjustment instructions.
    • Add a layer of caulk inside of the window and reinstall the stops.
